Unless you have extremely complicated tax returns, chances are you’re filing your taxes yourself. I know I do! My biggest problem is that the prices of using tax filing software keep going up. Here are a few ideas that you might want to use to file for free.
TaxACT Standard Online is one option that claims to be “free for everyone – no restrictions!” I have not used this program myself, but it seems to be similar to any of the other tax software that will guide you through your return. And if it is free, that’s a great way to go. It would definitely be worth checking out.
Turbo Tax Online is another one that has a free option. I have used Turbo Tax for the last five years and have always been very comfortable with it. They do offer a free federal return without all the bells and whistles, but I’ve never felt the need for those extras anyway. You can still ask questions and it still guides you. This is another great way to go.
Either way you go, you shouldn’t have to pay $50 for software. You will still have to file your state taxes yourself, but you should be able to do federal for free with either of these programs.
