Are your kids into Garfield? Mine had never heard of Garfield until I did a review of the The Garfield Show: Dinosaurs and Other Animal Adventures DVD last year. They went crazy for it! So when I was asked to take a look at the new Garfield Show: Summertime Adventures DVD, I knew my kids would disown me if I didn’t say yes!
In this new video, Garfield and his friends look for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, try to save their favorite pizza place and morph into superheroes in addition to visiting Cheese World, a Cheese Amusement Park!
On the one hand, these movies don’t contain the seamless animation that we have become used to on the big screen and they aren’t teaching major lessons (after all, Garfield needs his lasagna!). On the other hand, my kids LOVE them. They aren’t hurting anyone or anything, and for pure entertainment value, they are fun to have. I’m still trying to put my finger on what it is that specifically appeals to my children, but they happily and quietly watch one vignette after the next. At the end of one they jointly say, “Not again!,” crack each other up and then continue to watch happily. I’m sorry, but it doesn’t get much better than that when you’re trying to cook dinner!
