Did you see the movie Parental Guidance when it was in theaters? I didn’t have a chance to (I don’t get to many movies these days!), but my dad did and he told me that it was enjoyable. Well, today I watched it, so let me give you my take.
Parental Guidance is enjoyable and light-hearted, but a little cartoony at times. You know the kind of movie – where someone chases a kid under seats in an auditorium and everyone has to pop out of their seat due to the disturbance? That was a little goofy, but I will be honest with you, this movie also made me laugh out loud and cry! I don’t think anyone was more shocked than me, but I could really relate to it.
I have children about the same age as the young ones in the movie and my parents are at similar stages in life as the grandparents. I saw so many similarities that it drew me in. There is a part at the very beginning where someone is asking Billy Crystal (the grandpa) about social media. He’s talking Tweeting, hashtags, “Likes,” etc and it had me cracking up. At that point I paused the movie and called my dad. It occurred to me in that moment that he has no real clue what I do during the day, although he supports me whole-heartedly. That was hilarious! And the end I won’t ruin for you, but it was touching and I honestly did have to reach for my tissues.
All in all, this was a fun movie. A little schmaltzy at times, but what are you going to do? It’s Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. What do you expect? That’s what they do!
