One of the important things that we have to do from time to time is reassess our future. That includes everything from career to health to your psychological state. I know that many people take that look at themselves right after the New Year (thus the New Years resolution), but I don’t really think there is a set time. You do it when you do it, but you have to make sure that you do it! Otherwise we find ourselves in a rut.
For myself, there are a few things that I want to start doing this year:
- Learn to meditate. I do my share of trying to meditate, but I don’t feel like I do it such that the rest of the world actually gets cleared out of my brain. I need to work on that so that I can help center myself.
- Eat three (healthier) meals per day with two snacks. I keep ZonePerfect Bars in my car and my purse for snack times (they’re a great energy boost, they taste good and they keep me from running through a drive-through!), but I have to make a point of really focusing in on my food. I tend to make lunch and pick at it until 4pm while I’m working. NOT a good habit.
- Spend more time with my family as a family. I am crazy about my kids. I love them to pieces and I enjoy watching them as much as I enjoy having real conversations with them (my favorite!), but my husband and I work hard and we work long hours. Sometimes we are just TIRED. We listen to the kids and chat about our days, but I want to bring back the family game nights. Every week won’t work for us, but twice per month is totally doable. Especially during the summer.
So now – how do I encourage myself to do these things? I’m going to write a little letter. To myself!
Dear future me,
Your family is the most important thing to you. And as you always tell your friends and family, you can’t give them the best unless you’re taking care of yourself. You need to find a way to relax and enjoy the small things. You enjoy life now, but it could be even better! Find that center. Find that calm. I know you can do it because I know you better than anyone else.
Hugs from yourself,
Alli
I encourage you to set some goals for yourself. Write yourself a letter that you can refer back to when you feel like you’re falling off your course! And if you’re not comfortable doing this with yourself, grab a friend and wrangle them into writing you a letter. You do the same for them! Just hold yourself accountable because things CAN and will be better that you thought.
