I have always been a big proponent for recycling. Even though Chicago pulled the plug on the blue bin program after covering only half of the city (they say it’s picking up again this year, but it certainly hasn’t gotten to my zip code yet!), I think it’s important to teach the kids. I also think it’s important that when you recycle your products, you clean them out. So if you’ve ever wondered or struggled with how to clean a peanut butter jar before recycling, here’s how to do it!
This is the peanut butter jar that we just finished. After I took this photo, I promptly removed the last bits that were able to be reached (don’t waste the deliciousness!), gave a little squirt of dish detergent and then filled the jar about 3/4 of the way with very hot water. You’ll want to make sure to screw the cap back on tightly and then shake the jar for about a minute. I find that the bubbles get so dense that I have to pour a little bit out halfway through, so feel free to do that as needed.
After a minute of shaking, your jar should look like this inside. You can probably continue with the original water and soap, but I find that the residue comes off more quickly if you dump out the dirty and start over. After a second minute of shaking the clean hot water and soap, your jar should be crystal clear like mine at the top! And as a bonus, the label will likely slide off due to the heat from the water!
This is an easy way to get the kids involved with recycling, so think about making this their job! It really is about making an effort to take care of our planet. Every little bit helps!
*Note – don’t forget that you can also use these as extra storage! Think Legos, Polly Pockets, dice, beads, marbles, paper clips or any other little items that seem to constantly scatter around the house!
