Happy Earth Day!! Earth Day is becoming one of my favorite days of the year. Before I had kids I didn’t think much of it. Since they’ve joined us, I see how much it means. I have become a huge advocate of recycling in the last few years. My area of Chicago doesn’t have blue-bins, but my parents and in-laws will tell you that we frequently show up with a load of cans, boxes, plastic, and glass for theirs. I would hike our paper over there too, but it’s heavy and there’s a large bin at the school by our house that accepts it. Did I think like this 10 years ago? Not really. I was just out of college and concentrated on myself. Now I feel like I see a bigger picture.
Some of my favorite stories of my son are the ones where he scolds me for leaving a light on. He was two the first time he did that. “Mommy, turn off the light! You’re wasting energy!” I’m not a crazy environmentalist – I use paper towels and lots of other things that may not be “green,” but I think it’s important to do what you can when you can. It doesn’t take much for me to throw my cans into a bin instead of the garbage. Or turn off the water while I’m brushing my teeth. It’s really the little things.
