This is a little off topic from some of my usual fare, but it’s been on my brain so I thought I’d share. Much to my family’s dismay, I am not a huge cook and have never been all that interested in cooking. As my son got older and now my daughter, I realized that I had to stop cooking like I was in college and start adding vitamins to our food.
Just over a year ago, my girlfriend Liz suggested an awesome blog – A Year Of Slow Cooking. For a solid year Stephanie made one crock-pot dish per day and blogged about it on this site. Her site changed a lot for me. I started cooking more – and it was good food! I threw everything into a pot and it turned into dinner. It was amazing to me (I don’t get out much!) – particularly because all I kept hearing about crock-pots were that you ended up with “boiled dinner” (Thanks Steve!). But hers weren’t, they were REALLY good. And if they weren’t, she told you not to make them!
I mention this now because it has occurred to me how much I’ve saved by crock-pot cooking. I make soups and freeze the leftovers into individual portions. I make a great chili and feed everyone at a labor day gathering. She has a fantastic Mango Chicken dish that is my favorite meal of all time and my husband refuses all canned soups now that he’s tasted her Moroccan Lentil Soup. And NONE of these have exorbitant costs involved. It just tastes like they do.
Best of all, Stephanie has just come out with a cookbook! Make It Fast, Cook It Slow: The Big Book of Everyday Slow Cooking is available at Amazon. It’s already on my holiday list and I plan to get the book for at least one family member.
If you are at all interesting in crock-pot cooking I highly recommend checking out her site or her book. It will be worth your time and future savings.
