*Fine Print – I was not compensated by this post. I was given the film for review. All opinions and statements are my own.
Have you heard of the film Antboy? I hadn’t before I was asked if I wanted to review it, but it looked intriguing and perfect for my 8-year old son. Here is the description:
12-year-old Pelle is bitten by an ant and develops superpowers. Aided by comic book nerd Wilhelm, Pelle creates a secret identity as superhero Antboy. When a super villain The Flea enters the scene, Antboy must step up to the challenge.
Antboy Movie Review: Here is what my son had to say: “It was really great! Basically, Antboy is a really neat kids version of Spider-Man except that there are different villains. It’s like Spider-Man because Antboy – a.k.a. Pelle – gets bitten by an ant. It’s not radioactive, but it’s a really rare type of species. If it bites you, you get the powers of that ant. My favorite part of the movie was when Antboy had to use his acid pee (urine) to melt the lock. It was a totally unexpected way to break a lock!”
I can’t say that this was my favorite film (I found myself zoning out constantly after about the 1st half hour), but there were a few parts that were cute. The story itself was your typical superhero story (Boy likes girl. Girl doesn’t notice him. Boy becomes a superhero. Boy tells his best friend. Boy goes through a montage of costumes (which was very cute). Girl gets captured by bad-guy. Boy saves girl.) and it is very appropriate for the 6-11 year old age range. Anyone older may get bored and anyone younger might be a little scared by the bad-guy (my 5 1/2 year old daughter was a bit). That being said, my son REALLY enjoyed it and I think you’ll get a similar response from any kid around the same age.
