I recently went to get my hair cut by a real salon professional at The Water Tower Place in downtown Chicago. This was the first time a professional has touched my head in about 16 years – other than the wonderful woman who styled my hair for my wedding. To tell you how truly low-maintenence I am, I have been cutting my own hair since college. I do an okay job, but my husband fixes the back to make it look decent. This isn’t totally a frugal choice, as I’m sure you’re guessing, but probably a testament to my own laziness. I just think it’s silly to pay someone $12 to do something I can do myself. But, my girlfriend Liz told me that it was time I went somewhere real, so I did.
When I got to this swanky salon overlooking downtown, I felt a little out of place. Everyone looked like they knew what they were doing. They were whipping out potions and tools and all kinds of other things that I couldn’t relate to, but the people they were working on looked amazing. I met my Hair Artist, Susan Maccoy for a moment, and she assessed the state of my hair. She spoke to a gentleman, and I was quickly ushered into a hair washing and conditioning room. My hair was washed, conditioned, and wrapped in a towel. I was then sat under a hair dryer for 10 minutes so that I could watch the hair-art around me. I spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out how these people did what they did. One woman was styling another woman’s hair for what I can only guess was a wedding. Mother of the bride? I’m not sure, but it was really entertaining to watch how much went into this ‘do’.
After that, I was taken into the private area of my Hair Artist. Susan cut my hair and showed me several ways to style it, both with accessories and without. I left feeling like my hair was clean and I had more of a handle on it. Plus, it felt thicker! Whatever conditioner they put on my hair (they said it was made in-house) made it feel smooth and thick. A nice combo for me!
During the appointment, Susan and I got to talking and she graciously offered a hair special just for Couponing For 4 readers!
