Have you heard of Saffron Road? I had not until I was recently asked to try it. Saffron Road is a Halal Cuisine that is available in pre-packaged and frozen varieties! I’m not familiar with any other frozen Halal food, so I was very excited to be able to introduce this to my friends who had Halal homes.
I was able to find Saffron Road products at my local Whole Foods and it seems that they are carried at most or all Whole Foods locations in Chicago and (hopefully soon if not now!) the country. I purchased the Lamb Saag, Pad Thai and Chicken Strips all from the Frozen Foods section. I made the chicken in the oven and both the Lamb Saag and Pad Thai in the microwave.
Before telling you about our experience, one word of caution. For some reason, the Lamb Saag microwaveable bowl was hotter to the touch than anything I’d ever microwaved in a similar fashion. This was my own problem because I didn’t put a plate under it, so I gently carried the container, but ultimately burned myself (I think with the steam?) and dropped it on the carpet. I’ve tried several times, but I can’t get the bright yellow turmeric out of the carpet! Again, this is no fault of the food (it was hot, as it should be!), but PLEASE remember to put a plate under yours when you microwave it!.
That being said, we all really liked the food. My daughter devoured the chicken fingers and said, “These are the best chickens ever! Let’s get more!” I’d say that’s a pretty good response! (My son wasn’t feeling well and just ate a little rice) My husband and I both tried the chicken as well. He really liked it and I liked that it was real chicken with real crispy breading. It was very light on the seasoning, but I recognize that that’s a good thing for most kids (as testified by my daughter!). It wasn’t my personal favorite, but what do I know! My daughter and husband loved it!
My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the Lamb Saag and Pad Thai. One of my favorite thing about these items is that they display a spice level on the front of the package. The Lamb Saag has a “Mild” temperature bulb and the Pad Thai has a “Medium.” I think that’s pretty accurate for the American palate. I say it that way because I have many friends who would pretend that they didn’t even taste the spice in the Pad Thai, so just go with me here. 😉
The Lamb Saag is the first frozen lamb dish I’ve ever had and I was impressed. What impressed me the most (other than the great flavor and good amount of lamb included in the dish) was the description on the box. After reading the ingredients, I am familiar with every item on the list. There is nothing that I can’t spell or pronounce – a big deal in my book! Also, the box indicates that the lamb is pasture raised, 100% vegetarian fed, raised without antibiotics and all natural. I’m a big fan of any frozen convenience meal I could make at home if I had enough time and am very comfortable eating this again in the future.
The Pad Thai was good, but fairly standard. I liked the kick and the noodles didn’t get too mushy in the microwave (always a bonus!). I also really appreciated that there were real peanuts in the mix.
