Having a baby is usually one of the most exciting times of a parent’s life. It is also one of the most terrifying. I remember when the doctor told me that I was about to have my son, I started crying and shaking. I was thrilled, excited, terrified, and knew that my life was about to change. I also remember thinking that I wanted my mommy. And I hadn’t called her “Mommy” since I was about four.
There’s so much we don’t know as knew parents. Will our child be healthy? Will I know if he’s sick? Will he get a rash if I don’t change him right away? Is he getting enough food?
A recent National Survey commissioned by Playtex asked parents what their biggest concerns were. Afterward, expert pediatrician Dr. Laura Jana, author of the newly released Heading Home with your Newborn: From Birth to Reality Second Edition shared some great tips for dealing with them.
57% of moms surveyed said that they worried about establishing a healthy sleep routine and 49% were concerned about establishing a healthy feeding routine. Dr. Jana’s tip in this area is to “Go with the Flow with the Feedings.”
“Not everyone eats the same thing, in the same amount, at the same time, day in and day out–and babies are no exception! Prepare for a reasonable amount of variation in the amount your baby eats as you establish a routine with your baby. Focus your attention on making sure that your newborn is waking up every few hours to feed and is getting enough to eat to gain weight and grow as expected.”
67% of new moms cite their own mom as their main source of information during the first two weeks at home with their newborn. 64% also turned to their pediatrician and 49% turned to other moms. I remember using every single one of these options and I’m not sure how well I would have done without any of them. Even the best and most hardworking new moms (and old moms!) need a shoulder to lean on. If only to be a reminder that there are people out there who care about your well-being while you’re caring for your little one’s well-being.
