Ever since Ubisoft announced that Rayman Legends would become a reality, my husband has been all abuzz. I played the original Rayman game in college and it became a bit of an obsession. My girlfriend and I had a competition that we could beat it (as a team) before our friend who preferred to play by himself. I think he still won, but it was a blast and made for some fun 2AM memories complete with shouting, cheering and laughs. That being the case, I was pretty excited to hear about Rayman Legends myself!
Here is the scoop on the new game:
First, it doesn’t change the classic play style. Rayman doesn’t know many tricks and he doesn’t need ’em! He is the same little guy with the flying hair that you know and love. No worries there!
The levels are gorgeous! Just like my beloved original, these levels are bright and full of color, but the background and images in this game actually verge on real art at times. Just beautiful!
Here are my husband’s “this is awesome!” reactions:
- There are multiple approaches to playing and difficulty
- You can play through to see the levels!
- A lot of times I just wanted to get through a level so that I could unlock the next one to see what it was like!
- You have to play through to get every Teensie and every Lum!
- You can play through to get on the leaderboards (lists record holders from all over the world in real-time!)
- You can also collect all the Creatures (sort of like collecting mini-figures in the LEGO Wii and DS games)
Rayman Legends also makes creative use of Wii U gamepad features. Just when you thought that controlling Murphy to help Rayman’s friends through levels was getting old, you’ll use the gamepad to power a slingshot or twist a level 360 degrees to help get through it. It can be a little confusing or overwhelming (at least for me, who spent lots of my time shouting, “No!!” or “Wait, I’m not ready!” My kids thought it was hilarious), but it’s a very very cool feature.
One thing to note is that some later levels can be infuriatingly difficult. Luckily you aren’t penalized for trying over and over and over again. And you’ll definitely need to! Either way, you’re going to want this game! Fun for you AND the family!
Rayman Legends is currently available on Wii U, PC, Playstation, Xbox and Vita.
