Have you ever seen those coupons in the CVS or Walgreens ad that says “Earn $25 for your next New or Transferred prescription?” These are little pieces of happiness as far as I’m concerned.
We are always filling prescriptions around here. You probably don’t realize it, but you probably are too. If you have kids, you get Amoxicillin regularly. If you have health issues you may need to have a dosage adjusted. I realize that these days many insurances require mail order pharmacy participation, but most have a 3 month grace period. This is where the money is made.
Walgreens and Target will only accept coupons printed by them. Many other pharmacies will accept competitor coupons as well as their own. CVS, Dominick’s (UPDATE - Dominick’s no longer takes competitor coupons), and Kmart are among these stores. And don’t forget – Dominick’s accepts expired coupons!
Sometimes you will find these coupons in the paper, sometimes online, and sometimes (if you’re lucky like my grandma!) they will pop out of the magic coupon machine at CVS. Do yourself a favor and keep these coupons! Don’t throw them away.
If you have a “New prescription” coupon, start the prescription at that store. The next month have it transferred to CVS (or any other pharmacy that has a coupon or accepts competitor coupon). The next month send it to your mail order. Then start again with something new!
You’ll be surprised how fast it all adds up. The store is happy and you are happy. Everyone wins!

Just a quick ?- so u can make the rounds with say Allegra for example, I am at Wags right now- transfer to RiteAid next refill, then CVS and so on. Can u bounce the same prescription over again or does it have to be a different drug? Thank u for all u do!!!
You sure can! As long as you have a coupon for each place (and CVS takes competitor coupons!) you can do it. Many pharmacies only accept one transfer because this is becoming popular, but if it’s at Wags right now, you could do CVS, Target, Kmart, Rite Aid (in any order) and get a gift card at each. Then you’d have to wait for a grocery store (Meijer, Dominick’s, whatever) which also puts them out occasionally. Nice, huh?
Fine print on Kmart: “The amount paid for the prescription(co-pay plus amount reimbursed by insurance or, if no insurance, the retail price) must exceed the value of the gift card offer to qualify for the full value of the offer. Gift card amount shall equal the amount paid for the prescription(co-pay plus amount reimbursed by insurance, or if no insurance, the retail price) up to a maximum of $20.”
Tried using the coupon to get $20 gift card, but since I paid around $1 for prescription the pharmacy would only allow me that amount off(less than $1) on a purchase from the health care area.
Hello! Not sure what you mean by “most have a 3 month grace period” for mail order. You are doing such an awesome job btw. Thanks so much for all the all the work you put into saving money for others!
Thank you so much!
I mean that many mail order pharmacies that you are required to use allow you three months to get your individual prescription filled at brick & mortar stores. So you could take two or three of those months and use the coupons to make some money back before having to send it in to get filled by the mail order companies.
I live in College Station, TX. Kroger and HEB pharmacies offer the prescription transfer bonus but they won’t accept the ones for the $5/month scripts. Fortunately right now that is all I have to fill. Is that the case in your neck of the woods?
I do this with prescriptions that are on the 4 dollar list that giant eagle, Kroger and Meijer has in Ohio. I pay for those medications and never submit them to my prescription insurance. Its cheaper to do this than pay my 7 dollar co pay for generic. Plus if I get it filled a Kroger I get my gift card plus get 50 fuel points for filling my prescription there. So I get double perks.
Just wondering if there are currently any prescription coupons out there, or where they were last seen. I had two Jewel ones in the last month and used one at Jewel and the other at CVS, but I have no idea where I got them from.
Unfortunately these have become few and far between. I don’t know of any right now, but I’ll keep a lookout!
